Juraj ​Šebesta

Juraj Šebesta specializes in artistic prose and translations of dramatic works from the ​English language. He first won the Jury Prize of the 1996 Short Story competition for his ​prose Waiting for a Miracle (Čakanie na zázrak). He made his literary debut with the ​collection of short stories Sobriety (Juga 2005). Several of his short stories were ​published in magazines and anthologies abroad. His novel for teenagers and adults,

When the Dog Laughs (Keď sa pes smeje, 2008, 2009, 2013, Juga, Edition Ryba), received ​great reader response and won several awards, including participation in the finals of the ​prestigious Slovak literary prize Anasoft Litera. The book was published in Czech in 2011 by ​the publishing house CooBoo. A loose continuation of this novel is the comic diary of a ​teenage girl, Venussha, a Difficult Week (Venussha, ťažký týždeň), which was also published ​in Czech translation in 2013 by the CooBoo edition of Albatros Media publishing house.


Juraj Šebesta is the director of the city library in Bratislava and remains actively involved in ​literature.
